AND THEY WERE PERFECT PARENTS TOO!

They were fiercely proud of their children’s accomplishments.

They played together as a family.

They went to school plays, parent/teacher interviews, and helped with school work.

They co-parented, Gomez was just as active in raising their children as Morticia was.

When their children wanted something that they disapproved of, they were disappointed but relented because it would make them happy.

Plus, all TV married couples kind of hate each other and argue 90% of the time for the sake of comedy, but these two have always seemed to be forever and always in love, which is kind of sweet.

And if that’s only possible because they’re weirdos, what does that say about us?

They were also the first married couple on tv that showed to be sexually active!

The Bates Motel Season Finale, A Wonderful, Terrible Review

It’s a little crazy how my opinion of The Bates Motel has changed since I started watching it. I went from loathing almost everything about it, to looking forward to watching it, every week. I’ve never been more happy to be proven wrong by a show, as I think I’ve said before.

I was really won over by the characters, the plot twists and cliff hangers and the general feeling around the story, which is simply impossible to describe. I must say that I’m sad to see the series go until next season.

That said, the finale left me a little bit dry. With the series’ talent for cliff hangers and plot twists, I was surprised how straight forward the finale was. I suppose that’s not a bad thing, per se, but I remember thinking, with a proper sense of dread, about how long I’d have to wait for the resolution of another mystery ending. But I guess not.

The episode itself centred around Norman and Emma going to the school formal, with Emma hoping that Norman would discover feelings for her, but of course, that flame he has for Bradley keeps a’burning.

Norma prepares to meet Abernathy out at the docks, as per his arrangement. She tells Sargent Romero about it and spends most of the episode freaking out that he won’t come through for her. She gets a gun, and even bonds with Dylan over learning how to use it. It’d be touching, if not for the loaded firearm involved.

At the dance, Emma catches Norman peeking over at Bradley many times, and calls him out on his very obvious lingering feelings before leaving the dance, and leaving Norman stranded. You’d think it couldn’t get worse for poor Norman, but it does when Foxface, Bradley’s strange looking boyfriend confronts him and demands he leave Bradley alone, punching him and leaving him to wallow in the rain outside of the school.

AS Norman trudges home, Norma arrives at the docks and oversees Abernathy and Romero talking. It seems as if Romero is trying to buy his way into the business of asian prostitute selling, before he shoots Abernathy dead and throws him and his bag of money into the bay. Seriously, the bay is getting a lot of use as a disposal area for illegal and questionable items, lately.

Norma is reassured by Romero before heading back home, conscience clear and weight lifted.

Norman is not in such an easy situation, as his english teacher, Ms. Watson picks him up off the side of the road and takes him home to clean up his bleeding face before driving him back to his mother’s. There is definitely some strange romantic tension between the two, that comes to a head as Ms. Watson goes to get changed and Norman watches him, while imagining that Norma is there, judging Ms. Watson, accusing her of trying to seduce Norman.

Because we all couldn’t see that happening from a mile away.

Norma tells Norman that he knows what he has to do, before we cut to Norman running home.

The final scene of the season is Ms. Watson, with her throat slit, laying in a pool of blood.

We found out some interesting information in this episode; mostly that Norma grew up in an abusive family and that she has lied about her family all of her life, especially about her brother, who used to molest her as a preteen.

I’m not sure what to think of the season finale of Bates Motel. It’s certainly not what I was expecting, but at this point, that seems par for the course with this show.
